Philip Y. Drake
His areas of focus in counseling include marital therapy (including premarital counseling), sexual addiction and wholeness, men’s issues, intimacy (emotional, physical and spiritual), communication and blended families (including parenting skills). Phil interned with and currently co-leads a men’s sexual addiction group with Dr. Douglas Rosenau, renowned sex therapist and author of Celebration of Sex and a number of other books. He did previous work at The Intimacy Center, working with Dr. Rosenau and a number of other sex therapists. Phil believes successful counseling has four major components. First and foremost, the client must realize and agree that there is an individual problem to be solved/issue to be dealt with. This may seem obvious but this is sometimes nonexistent. Secondly, there has to be a desire for change. Thirdly, there must be a willingness to work and to try approaches that might not have been tried in the past. Finally, there must be safety and a level of trust between the counselor and client that allows the client to risk the pain of trying to change. In other words, the pain of changing must become less than the pain of staying the same. Phil’s approach to counseling is to try to meet clients where they are and use whatever approach, or combination of approaches, will work best for the client(s). The term for this is “eclectic” or more recently “integrated.” Specifically, he utilizes cognitive/behavioral therapy (focusing on changing our unhealthy thoughts and behaviors to healthy thoughts and behaviors) but he is also very person-centered (focusing on what the individual is experiencing and needs to deal with at that particular point in time). Finally, a psychodynamic approach, meaning that we are impacted by our past, is utilized as well. Phil had spoken on multiple occasions on Marriage and Married Sexuality and he and his wife have led couples retreats on dealing with emotional pain and experiencing emotional intimacy. Phil has been married for 24 years, has 6 children (yours, mine and ours – ranging in age from 32 to 19) and 4 grandchildren.
