Bipolar
disorder is a treatable, medical condition marked by
extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and
behavior. It is not a character flaw or a sign of
personal weakness. Bipolar disorder is also known as
manic depression because a person’s mood can
alternate between the “poles” of manic highs and
depressive lows.
Bipolar
disorder affects nearly six million adult
Americans. Equal numbers of men and women develop
this illness and it is found among all ages, races,
ethnic groups and social classes. The illness tends
to run in families and appears to have a genetic
link. Bipolar disorder is the sixth leading cause of
disability in the world and is a major cause of
suicide.
Medication prescribed by a psychiatrist is the first
step in treatment of bipolar disorder. Counseling is
important to help the individual, family and friends
learn how to manage and live with bipolar disorder.
At Trillium Springs Counseling, our
counselors have special training and
experience in helping persons meet the daily
challenges of this illness.
